Terms of Use

Last updated 11 August 2026 · applies to the Shanhai iOS app

Shanhai is provided as is, for personal use. Pro is optional — pouring, the creature and the daily changes stay free forever. Subscriptions are billed to your Apple ID and renew automatically unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the current period ends. Lifetime is a one-time purchase, not a subscription. Apple's standard licence terms apply to anything bought through the App Store.

That paragraph is also the terms page inside the app. Everything below is the same set of facts, written out at length.

1. Who you are agreeing with

Shanhai (山海) is made and published by an independent developer, Fuuqiu (Fuuqiu@gmail.com). Installing or using the app means you accept these terms. If you do not, please do not use it.

The app is distributed through Apple's App Store, so Apple's Licensed Application End User License Agreement applies alongside these terms. Where the two conflict on a matter Apple governs — payment, refunds, redownloads — Apple's terms win. Apple is not a party to these terms and is not responsible for the app or its content.

2. What you get for free, permanently

Unlimited pouring by text or voice, the creature's full growth, a visible daily change, seven days of history, and no advertising. These are not a trial and are not metered. There is no entry limit that can run out and no wall in front of writing something down.

3. Pro

Pro is optional and adds insight, history and export. It is offered as:

  • Weekly — US$2.99, billed weekly, auto-renewing.
  • Yearly — US$39.99, billed yearly, auto-renewing, with a 3-day free trial for new subscribers.
  • Lifetime — US$79.99, a one-time purchase. Not a subscription.

Prices shown are US App Store prices. Your local price and currency are set by Apple for your storefront and may differ. Prices may change for future purchases; an existing subscription is only affected in the ways Apple's rules allow, and Apple notifies you first.

Renewal and cancellation

Weekly and yearly subscriptions renew automatically unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. Your Apple ID is charged at confirmation of purchase and again at each renewal. Manage or cancel any time in Settings › Apple ID › Subscriptions on your device — cancelling stops the next charge and leaves the current period running to its end. Uninstalling the app does not cancel a subscription.

Free trial

The yearly plan may include a 3-day free trial for new subscribers. If you do not cancel before it ends, it converts to a paid year automatically. The app schedules a local reminder 24 hours beforehand so nothing is charged by surprise; that reminder needs notification permission, which you can decline, and it is a courtesy rather than a condition of these terms. Any unused portion of a trial is forfeited if you buy the equivalent subscription earlier, per Apple's rules.

Refunds

All purchases are processed by Apple, so refunds are handled by Apple and are subject to Apple's policy — request one at reportaproblem.apple.com. The developer cannot issue refunds directly, but is happy to hear what went wrong.

Restoring

Purchases are tied to your Apple ID. "Restore" in the app or on the price page brings Pro back on a new device or after a reinstall, with no account needed.

4. Your content is yours

Everything you pour belongs to you. The app claims no licence over it and no rights in it — which is easy to promise, because the text never leaves your device (see the Privacy Policy). Since there is no server-side copy, keeping your own backup of your phone is the only way to protect against losing entries; deleting the app deletes them permanently.

The app's own artwork, the bestiary text and the code remain the developer's. Share cards you export are yours to post anywhere.

5. This is not therapy

Shanhai is a journal with a black hole in it. It is not a medical device, not a diagnosis, not treatment, and not a crisis service. Nothing it shows you — the feeling words, the insights, the creature — is a clinical assessment or advice of any kind. If you are struggling badly, please contact a qualified professional or your local emergency or crisis line.

6. Fair use

Please do not reverse-engineer, decompile, tamper with or resell the app, and do not attempt to circumvent purchases. It is written and maintained by one person, and that is the whole of the enforcement budget.

7. As is

The app is provided as is, without warranties of any kind, to the maximum extent permitted by law. It is a young app made by one developer: there will be bugs, and features may change, be added or be removed between versions. To the extent the law allows, the developer is not liable for indirect or consequential loss, including loss of entries. Nothing here limits any right you have under mandatory consumer law in your country.

8. Changes and ending

These terms may be updated; the current version always lives on this page with its date, and continuing to use the app after a change means accepting it. You can stop at any time by cancelling any subscription and deleting the app.
